Music and Kalamazoo go way back. The Gibson Guitar company was founded here and established a factory in the Northside in 1917. In this new center on Parson's Street, they emploted around 1,000 people and could make 1,000 products a day. The \"Kalamazoo Line\", dropped in the 1930s, honored the city that supported Gibson in its earliest days before being moved to Nashville, TN. They produced guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, and ghosts if you believe the reports.

Many former employees of Gibson and current workers at Heritage Guitars have reported a haunting of the factory's third floor. The lights reportedly flicker late at night and footsteps echo out through the space. Many believe it is the company's founder, Orville Gibson, haunting his old factory.

Western's music programs are highly ranked on a national level. Here at the Dalton Center, students can learn both performance and production in high quality recording studios. Many MAT (multimedia arts technology) students record late at night when the rest of the building closes. Working alone can get spooky that late at night, as students report strange noises in the building and odd interference in recorded sound. Many suspect the building is haunted.

One of the most haunted buildings in Kalamazoo is Heritage Hall. With so many reports of paranormal activity, we figured it would be best to stay clear of East Campus. Formerly known as East Hall, the building was constructed in 1905 and is the only remaining part of WMU's original quad. Administrators, artists, and library go-ers in the hall have reported flickering lights, strange noises, alarms triggering without cause, and an older man wandering late at night. So many reports were filed that in 2009, a team of paranormal investigators came to Kalamazoo to document anything they could find. They reported hearing the voices of ghosts speaking about the hall and calling out names.

Some speculation on the haunting comes from an incident in 1933. On the lawn of Heritage Hall, a professor named Leslie Wood suddenly collapsed when boarding a bus filled with students. Passing on the scene, the university honored Doctor Wood through the naming of Wood Hall.

Another theory is that former Western President Waldo, interred in the foundation of the hall, is haunting the site of his grave and the school he served for 35 years. Don't be afraid, he is remembered for his concern for students of diverse backgrounds and his passion for the success of this university.

Although Sangren Hall may seem like a normal building it is anything but ordinary. Not many students know that the very walls of Sangren Hall contain the ashes of past university president, Paul V. Sangren, and his wife Flossie, making the building their final resting place! Whether or not President Sangren's spirit lingers on campus is up for debate but his legacy is still felt throughout the building. Today, students can see the exact location of Dr. Sangren's ashes marked by a plaque on the wall of the first floor. Next to the plaque stands a portrait of the man himself who continues watching over the students of Western Michigan University.

There are a number of ghosts we'll meet on this tour and Peter the Great is our first. Not the Emperor of Enlightenment Russia...the horse! Born in 1895, he was trained on campus by a man named Peter Johnson. At that time, the land you're standing on now was a horse farm. He was a seriously successful racer along with his rider Daniel Streeter. He won races at the Kentucky Futurity and at the Empire City Track in New York City. Even after his racing career was ended by an injury, he is noted for a lineage of legacy racehorses. This history of horse racing and training is part of the reason for WMU being home of the Broncos. Late at night, if you hear the sound of hooves, look out for Peter the Great running across campus.

The Peter the Great memorial is directly outside the Seibert administration building.

The year is 1949, and Western Michigan University has broken ground on the first classroom building for the west campus. The building is named McCracken Hall to honor the legacy of the former Chemistry Department head, Dr. William McCracken. In the following years, McCracken Hall serves as the home for the Chemistry and Physics Department in the heart of campus. However by 2007, the building is abandoned by students with the only activity coming from the basement with the Paper Pilot Program. Well, the only living activity. As soon as the building became abandoned, rumors of ghosts haunting the building begin to fly.

Students report hearing odd noises and disembodied voices in the empty halls. Others say they see shapes in the windows and eerie flickering lights in the dead of the night. Some students think that this is the ghost of a former professor who died on campus whereas others think that it is the spirit of Dr. William McCracken himself. Regardless, as the building falls further into disarray throughout the years the reports of strange and unexplainable events persist. Finally, McCracken Hall becomes a ghost itself when it is demolished in 2019. Now the university's current student center stands in the building's old location. The question remains though, if the building is demolished are the ghosts gone as well or do they remain lingering in the halls?
